6 Steps to Selling a vehicle in Georgia

Here, you will find a short guide on quickly and successfully selling a vehicle in Georgia and the paperwork you need to do this. In addition to our guidelines, we recommend that you visit the Georgia Department of Revenue website to check the responsibilities of Sellers and Buyers.

1. Prepare Your Vehicle for Sale

You have to present your vehicle from the best side, so you should prepare it carefully. Check and make repair works if needed, and wash it thoroughly inside and out. Take high-quality photos that can be placed in your ad.

2. Place Your Advertisement

Use your photos and description of the car to compose an ad on profile sites. It is best to describe the vehicle and its qualities as accurately as possible to avoid wasting your time in vain.

3. Collect the Required Documents

Prepare a folder with documents, including the vehicle’s Certificate of Title and proof of sale. In Georgia, you should use a bill of sale (Form T-7) as proof. The bill of sale must contain all data about the car, the previous and new owner, and the details of the transaction.

4. Transfer the Ownership of Your Vehicle

You will also need to fill in the transfer of ownership on the reverse side of the vehicle’s title.

You have to enter this information:

  • Buyer’s full legal name and current address
  • Date of sale
  • Odometer reading at the present moment
  • Seller’s name and signature
  • Buyer’s name and signature

5. Give the Title to the New Owner

Give the documents to the vehicle’s new owner, but be sure to keep copies of them for yourself. You may need them in the future. However, you should not transfer any tags or license plates; these remain with the previous owner.

6. Cancel Registration and Insurance

Don’t forget to cancel the vehicle’s registration and insurance coverage to avoid wasting extra money. You can use this source to do it.
